The Optometry Career Path

  • Complete all necessary prerequisites. Each school has different prerequisites, and some do not even require a science major, so be sure to review the school and prerequisite list. Review each school’s deadlines, requirements, and fees.
  • Prepare for and pass the Optometry Admission Test (OAT), and file an application to apply to optometry school(s).
  • Join your school’s AOSA program to gain valuable benefits (unless you’ve already joined as a pre-optometry student).
  • Prepare for and pass the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) exams while obtaining your bachelor’s degree.
  • Earn your degree.
  • Finally, secure your license to practice. The scope of practice varies from state to state and requirements for licensure depend on individual state laws.
